Blog #14……..Finally Done!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 3:59 am

Thank God. This is our final blog post for this project. I’m so happy right now!!!! One main reason I’m so happy is because I personally think that blogging once a week is just too much. Like I dunno I think we could have handled blogging everytime we finished a book. I feel as though if we had blogged every time we finished a book the posts would have been longer because we would have had to blog about an entire novel instead of dividing the novel into pieces not only to read but to blog about.  These are just my thoughts but yea I did like blogging about the books it was an intresting spin on your basic college english course.  It was cool to take a discussion on book from the classroom and add technology to it and see how we all responded and read the thoughts and comments.

Blog #13…..Native Speaker

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 3:23 am

Since this is yet again another make up blog because I let time get away from me and say i’m gonna do it, I’ll do it in an hour, I’ll do it tonight, and so on.  Yea procrastination is my best friend really it is.  I have so much work to do simply because I procrastinate and watch TV and go on Myspace, and IM. When we first started reading this book and then all that stuff happened at Virgina Tech I found it Ironic that the main character of the book was an younger Asian male who seemed to be dealing with a lot of things and then the shooter at Virgina Tech was a English major who was in fact a young Asian male who obviously had quite a few problems.  No surprise here that at least one character dies in the book.  Also no surprise really that it is a young child and related to the main character.  I really think that while this book may have been the better of the books we have read in this class it really was more of the same for me. I know the intent of the course was to show the similarities and differences of canonical and non-canonical works but just for a change I would have like to have read a love story or something.

Blog #12….End of Sula!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 2:23 am

So now that we are finished with Sula and I’m all caught up with these blogs and comments I must say I am a happy camper!!!! :-) Like I dunno again these books aren’t my cups of tea so like i said before it has been a difficult semester!!! However out of all the books we have read this semester I must say that this has been one of my favorites! I dunno why but it did seem to draw me in just a little bit.  Of course it was an easy read in that it was a shorter one but even though it seems to be crazy and messed up just like most of the books we have read this semester I dunno I like this one the most.  I wish though just once we could get over the whole crazy people, death, and messed up relationship things. I’m still holding out just a bit of hope for our last book Native Speaker maybe that one won’t be so twisted!!! Where is the Love peoples????

Post #11 end of Invisible Man on to Sula!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 2:01 am

Ok so because I’m sick to death of Invisible Man, it was not a fav of mine and I think that it is just crazy and drove me crazy that the narrator couldn’t get so much as a name from Ellison I would rather write about Sula.  Since we have read nothing but crazy twisted stories about death, cheating, family members hating eachother and so on I can honestly say that I expected the same from Sula.  It seems to fit with everything else we have read.  This is why I dislike this book too cuz I really am more of a love story type of person.  Give me a good happy ending love story any day and I’ll more than likely love it if not like it more than the books we have read thus far in the semester.  Like I don’t know these books just really are not my thing so this class has been hard for me to get through.

Really Long Post….I Hope!!!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 12:59 am

Ok so I have been behind with postings and I know I now need to make up 3 from my count.  This post is the one that is supposed to be at least 2 pages long.  It has to do with the ungodly amount of reading we had to do for The Invisable Man so yea a couple books ago.  I’m going to try and do my best and work off of my memories of class discussion and what I read of the book to write this crazy long blog along with the other two I need to write.  So where we left off the narrator was in the mist of the the whole thing with the brotherhood.  I must say I’m glad were done and over with this book because yea I’m over it.  It seems like a great majority of the book is about the narrator’s experiance with the brotherhood.  When it turns out that the brotherhood does not even want him there or care about him.  This is in my mind the whole reason why the book is called the Invisable man, the narrator feels invisable and does not know where he belongs. All throughout the book the narrator is trying to find his place he goes from being in college to working in a factory to being in this brotherhood.  None of these places are where he belongs however.  The brotherhood just seems to get our narrator in more and more trouble.  From the rally for the evicted couple that starts a riot to the time the narrator gave a speech to a women’s organization and ended up sleeping with a married women and almost being caught.  This brotherhood thing is just not for him.  The group just seems to use him for a lacky and does not seem to have any real concern for him or his problems.  Let alone it is just annoying to read about this whole thing because it just seems to go on and on and on.  Like we get it you don’t belong with these people one chapter would have been enough maybe two but really Ellison you over did it with this thing!!!!  Also what is up with the narrator and carrying around this briefcase full of objects like he has that broken statue thing and something else when at the end of the story he only ends up throwing it all away neways so really what is the point of it??? Then the whole thing with the yams and how at first its like the best thing in the world to him but then when he eats another its like ehhhhh whatever, yea I don’t get that either it really is random!!! I guess we could just say this is yet another crazy book that probably should be in the canon but isn’t!!!

Blog #9…The Invisible Man…

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 4:47 pm

Ok so even though I’m behind in my blogs I figured I can still write on my opinion of this book.  I remember that even before we started reading I thought this book was going to be totally different.  I mean the title is The Invisible Man so I dunno I thought it was going to be about maybe a kid who feels left out of everything in his family or at school of something I dunno. I know if it were about a kid that felt invisible no matter where he went I could relate that to that.  This is because I have never been a popular person and especially here at school I feel completely invisible. Like I dunno I feel like no matter how hard I try to fit in and be nice and whatever I never seem to be noticed.  Now that we have started reading the book however, I dunno it just doesn’t seem to be my cup of tea.  Like it isn’t something I am interested in for whatever reason.  I guess I have always been like that though, I’m not a person that likes to read a lot.  So a book has to be really good to grab my attection.  This book just isn’t doing it for me. I dunno it seems like all semester we have just read these books that have so much going on and are just messed up in so many ways what with family members wanting to sleep with eachother and love going wrong I dunno I just have no intrest in them.  I’m sorry for being so honest but I have always been like that, I never could read a book that I was assigned to read.  However if it is one that I just pick up for a good read I usually can get through it no problem.  Maybe I’m just weird!!!

Blog #8…Canonical vs. Non-cononical?!?!?!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 4:16 pm

For this blog were supposed to write about themes we see in both canonical and non cononical books.  It’s purpose is ment to help us prepare for our paper that is coming up.  Now that we are getting into the book invisiable man it is clear that even though it is not a cononical work it has themes common with books we have read previously in the semester.  one theme common in this is book is the whole time thing.  In the book Invisable Man the narrator is opens the book with his grandfather’s dying words to his father.  These words are brought up again later in the book.  so we have the maybe not obsession with the past but we have flashbacks in this book for sure.  Since we are still working through the book all themes might not have come out yet.  So another Non-cononical work is the book I used for our wiki project.  This book was the collection of short stories and poems by Dorothy Parker. Working off of memory and our wiki one theme that stands out to me is the fact that in most of the short stories by Parker most of the relationships the characters have is that of a messed up love story.  None of the characters seem to get along with their lovers.  So Love or the lack there of is a reoccurant theme.  So this proves while a book not be included in the canon it still can fit and relate to the books in the canon.

Group work………oh no!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 3:12 am

Ok I must admit that I am one of those types of people who can not stand group projects.  This is only because in my past experiances of college group projects I have always been in the lucky group that outta maybe the 4 or 5 groups in the class has the most problems.  Like this one time in one of my education courses this one girl she would not do anything even though me and the other group member gave her as little as possible she still wouldn’t do the work and then tried to blame us her group members for everything.  so when I seen we had to do a group project I was not all too in love with the idea.  I’m sorry I like doing things myself because then I don’t have to relay on others to do this or that and I don’t have to worry about weither or not it is getting done.

However for this project I think it is going ok.  Like i see some trouble spots, I think my group members and I could try and get over ourselves and try to act more group like.  It is ok though I don’t mind as long as the assignment gets done.  From what I see of it now I defiently think that our wiki page is looking good.  Sure we’ve had some problems i.e. the fact that my book has visited almost every state on the east coast before it arrived here…….I still don’t have it by the way, I had to go to the st.rose library and get an alternative copy of the book to use……but according to the usps website it is in the mailroom somewhere so its here hopefully just in time for me to send it back…..ha ha!

For this week I commented Alex’s blog and I wanted to Comment Alyssa’s too but for some random reason when i went to leave the comment wordpress keep saying that it was a duplicate and that I had already commented her blog when i really didn’t so I dunno!!!

Final Thoughts on The Sound and The Fury!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 3:53 am

My final thoughts on this book is that it was an out there type of book.  Like the brothers wanting their sister, the cheating on spouses, death, love, and all that fun stuff. This book was really full of all that fun stuff.  I must admit I did cheat with this book and use sparknotes…..mostly because it was sometimes hard to follow and get what was going on. However, talking about it in class did help because while sparknotes give me the general idea of what happened in each chapter, class discussion of it caught what sparknotes left out.  While I was not a fan of it because I’m more of a fantasy person I would not say it was not interesting it just was not for me.  give me a good book about things that are just made up and far out there any day and I will probably like it. Why I think this book is included in the canon is because of the general themes it has in common with so many other canon books.  It has love, death, betrayal, incest all of which are important themes for canon books.

The Sound & The Fury~~Wiki and Blog

Filed under: Uncategorized — kellbell @ 3:26 am

Ok for this I choose the passage beginning on page 115.

I’ve got to marry somebody  Versh told me about a man who mutilated himself.  He went into the woods and did it with a razor, sitting in a ditch.  A broken razor flinging them backward over his shoulder the same motion complete the jerked skein of blood backward not looping.  But that’s not it.  It’s not not having them.  It’s never to have had them then I could say O That That’s Chinese I dont know Chinese.  And Father said it’s because you are a virgin: dont you see?  Women are never virgins.  Purity is a negative state and therefore contrary to nature.  It’s nature is hurting you not Caddy and I said That’s just words and he said So is virginity and I said you dont know.  You cant know and he said Yes.  On the instant when we come to realise that tragedy is second-hand.

First off is why I choose this passage out of the entire novel.  I choose this passage because its the part where the male Quentin (Caddy’s brother) is talking about the story of mutilation and the cutting off of the balls.  It seemed to me that when the mutilation was mentioned in class people didn’t seem to get this part so I thought I’d be helpful and point it out.  While I seem to have a very limited understanding of this passage I can sort of explain it.  I’m not 100% sure how you get that he is cutting off his balls in this but I’ll just go with it.  Like after reading it you can understand that the character has cut something off but most readers aren’t sure what.  So I can understand how a lot of people missed this.  I missed it too the first time we read it.   What is happening is Quentin is telling Caddy about the mutilation story he heard and how virginity goes again nature and women are never virgins to begin with simply because it goes against nature.  Quentin is also trying to talk Caddy out of getting married.  What is most important here is that this passage shows us the readers how impotent (sp?) Quentin is because I mean why would a guy even tell a story about some guy cutting his balls off, unless he was actually sick enough to want to do it to himself.  It also shows us just how far Quentin would go to try and convince Caddy not to get married.  Like he loves his sister that much that he would try to convince her that virginity really doesn’t exist and that the whole thought of it would go against what nature intends.  All this just so she wouldn’t get married.
